Manual Lymphatic Drainage Treatment - 5W1H Answered

Updated: Nov 10, 2022

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) was developed 90 years ago by Dr. Emil Vodder of France. Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle skin massage technique that promotes lymphatic drainage from the limbs and into the body's correct drainage system.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Treatment?

It is a manual therapy used to relieve extensive lymphedema in the limbs. Lymphedema is a chronic disease that causes swelling of human tissues. It can affect any part of the body but usually develops in the arms or legs. When the human body's lymphatic system fails to function properly, it develops. Please note that MLD may not completely cure these cases, but it is certain that MLD can reduce the size of the edema, which can greatly improve the overall condition of the patient, thus improving their lifestyle and self-esteem.

Secondly, MLD can also be used for trauma repairs, such as hematoma, deformation, tearing of muscle fibers, sports injuries and after plastic surgery, trauma or liposuction. In scar treatment, MLD significantly improves wound healing and leads to good scar formation. The technique can also be used for patients with fatty edema, chronic venous insufficiency, palliative care, and patients with high or difficult sleep levels, chronic and complex pain disorders such as fibromyalgia, migraine, and chronic fatigue.

Thirdly, MLD can help to relieve dysmenorrhea, fibromyalgia, scleroderma and treat cellulite. Healthy people also find benefits in MLD. Women have long appreciated its benefits for leg swelling and the effectiveness in removing stretch marks during pregnancy. Postpartum lymphatic massage can promote lactation in nursing mothers.

This can be used to reduce water retention in the limbs, especially after long flights or standing for long periods.

Artificial lymphatic drainage with deep oscillations can significantly reduce pain, reduce swelling and improve quality of life in patients with lymphedema after breast cancer surgery.

How does MLD help improve the quality of life for cancer patients?

MLD can help patients reduce pain and swelling in their limbs, and reduce local edema. MLD has been proven to effectively improve the quality of life of cancer patients. It also improves the restricted movement of the affected limb and the restricted spine and cervical areas. In this way, patients can improve their self-esteem, self-confidence, physical strength and exercise quality, and avoid the formation of lymphedema.

In short, artificial lymphatic drainage with deep oscillations can significantly reduce pain, relieve swelling and improve quality of life in patients with lymphedema after breast cancer surgery.

All patients must undergo a professional MLD assessment before the start of all MLD courses. We have developed a treatment plan at NHAC that suits the specific needs of the patient. After years of experience, this has proven to be very successful.
